Program notes:
Ave Maria No. 17 – Mater Divinæ Providentiæis the 17th Ave Maria in my 50-year Ave Maria Project (composing a new Ave Maria annually from 2005-2054).
The title of Our Lady of Providence or Maddonna della Divina Provvidenza is often connected with the Blessed Mother’s intervention at the Wedding Feast of Cana, Christ’s first public miracle. The date of this title’s origin is unclear but as early as 1580, an Italian artist named Scipione Pulzone created a beautiful painting called “Mater Divinæ Providentiæ”. In this painting, the Blessed Mother is tenderly holding the Divine Child. That same Divine Child, some 33 years later, would give His Mother to the disciple John, and to all… thus continuing her unique role in Divine Providence forever. This composition reflects Mary’s providential care both then and now, with a gentle and hope-filled joy.
