Ecce vox de caelis for SSATB a capella choir:
Duration: ca. 5:30
Premiere: 01.13.2012, by the Basilica of the National Shrine, Ben LaPrairie, conductor
Program Notes: Written as a Communion motet, Ecce Vox de Caelis is heavily influenced by the great tradition of Renaissance polyphony but it is drawn into a more “modern” musical language in conjunction with a switch to the English language in order to make more immediate the words “Behold a voice from heaven saying, this is my Beloved Son”. This motet concludes with a substantial doxology (Gloria Patri…) to acknowledge that this event marks the Gospel’s first revelation of the Holy Trinity.

Text (Matthew 3:17, Latin Vulgate and RSV translation):
Ecce vox de caelis dicens:
hic est Filius meus dilectus in quo mihi conplacui.
Behold a voice from heaven saying;
“This is my beloved Son,
in whom I am well pleased.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto,
Sicut erat in principio,
et nunc, et semper,
et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
