Ave Maria No. 2 for high voice and piano
Duration: ca. 5 minutes
Premiere: 05.12.2009 by Tammie Bradley, soprano, and Kevin Bylsma, piano
Program notes: Ave Maria Mater Dei is the second in my series of Ave Marias, a fifty year-long project (if I live until 2054). I composed the first Ave Maria in 2005, which was my first officially written-out/completed composition (ever) and I plan to write one each year for 50 years. This specific Ave Maria is a meditation on Mary’s role as God’s mother. The repetitive nature of the piano accompaniment in this piece serves as a vehicle to help one meditate– perhaps on the thought of God choosing a young girl to bear Himself, incarnate, within her body.
